Quilt Rescue

Rescued this from a next-stop-is-the-trash table at my local guild.
 2-year-old provided for size comparison 

It's hand-stitched, 3/4" English paper-pieced (EPP) hexagons; 
 
the fabric looks old and feels fragile.

I'm hoping to add enough to it to form a rectangle/square and make a table cover. I have a collection of 30's/40's reproduction fabric that should work for the flowers but I'm not sure what to use for the path. Maybe muslin? Any ideas are welcome!
