Tamale Day

Does doing something two years in a row make it a family tradition?
I sure hope so; fresh made tamales are fabulous, and surprisingly easy to make - especially when your hostess does all the prep work before we even got to her house.

This year, Marie joined the masa-line, along with the men-folk (Bre's husband, dad and father-in-law), while I helped Bre stuff and roll.
Chicken in chili verde sauce in one bag - cheese and chili in another.

I know what I'm having for every dinner this week.

Braving The Mall

I braved the mall, on the Friday before Christmas, and lived to tell the tale. Barely. Parking - and maniac drivers - was as bad as you'd expect, but inside the mall there were no crowds and short lines.

What possessed me? A promise to Naia for a Build-A-Bear My Little Pony before Christmas. And how could I say no to this face?
Naia came prepared for the wait - phone in one hand and pretty pink pony in the other.
And pure pre-teen attitude when it came to grandma taking too many pictures.
Loved spending the afternoon with my girls. But no way, no how am I going back to the mall the rest of this year!

Stitch Markers

Thought I'd try my hand at making crochet-friendly stitch markers this holiday season. My LYS stocked a new brand of commercial markers recently and they were awful. Pretty colors - which is why we all bought them - but soooo dull and difficult to use. Which got me thinking about why crocheters couldn't have pretty, functional stitch markers like the knitters do.

So, I did a bit of research and bought several colors of pretty, metal, sharp, coil-less safety pins.

I added some beaded trinkets from my ever growing jewelry-making stash (enhanced by a visit to French General just the day before . . . ), attached them to seasonal gift cards and voila

holiday presents for my students and pals*. And maybe one or two just for me

* Sorry for the dull pictures - trust me, these sparkle in real life.

Oh. Christmas Tree

Pop and Leia decorated our tree earlier this week.

Leanne was going to help,

but the timing didn't work out.

Grandma took pictures and supervised, because somebody has to do the hard work.

Merry almost-Christmas, y'all!

Santa Day

We dressed the little girls in their princess dresses (one set of them, anyway - they have several to choose from, especially after Addy's very kind momma sent us the princessy dresses Addy had outgrown) and took them to visit Mr. Claus.

Leanne was excited to see Santa, all the way up to the minute she realized she was expected to sit on his lap. She was NOT pleased and wanted her grandma right now. Leia was a pro, chattering away like Santa was her BFF.

I'm not really sure why - the groups before us didn't do it - but the line-control guy offered to take a couple of pics of hubby and me with the girls while we waited our turn to see the big man.

Soooo happy he did.  Happy, happy, merry, merry y'all!

A Teeny Bit Late

I put the finishing touches on 2 holiday wall-hangings, one for Thanksgiving

and one for Christmas.

Last Christmas.
The dresden turkey just needed his button eyes sewn on, and a bit of reinforcing on the binding corners. Thought I'd have him done in time to hang this year, but the trip to Colorado intervened. But he's labeled and done, ready for next year. Bonus points for me!
The paper-pieced Christmas cactus needed 1 edge and the label sewn sewn down - 30 minutes worth of work I successfully put off for 12 months. I asked Leanne if she'd help me take pix -
and since she was in a silly mood, she let me take these. Sometimes you don't get the shot you thought you wanted - sometimes often Leanne's (or Leia's) version is much, much better.

Poster Girls

Guess where we took the little girls today?

Don't they look cute in their princess finery? Both of them loved the movie, so I'm guessing I'll be watching it a lot, just as soon as it's released on Netflix/Amazon/iTunes.

Hubby wanted me to try for pics of Leanne in the same pose as yesterday's Leia shots.

Not quite as good, but I love it. The light yesterday was just so perfect. Will try again on the next almost-rainy day.

Right Time

Occasionally, things fall perfectly into place.

Like today, when Leia put on her new Princess Anna dress (from Frozen),

then sat down by the front window, with late afternoon clouds softening the light,

to practice her hand-sewing*.

I love these photos. Wish they were better than cell-phone quality so I could have big prints made.

*Plastic canvas and a darning needle. But we all have to start somewhere, right?

Addy, In Pictures

Our Colorado trip went by much, much too fast. We crammed in a lot of activities, but the best part, by far, was just hanging out with Addison and her folks.
We went to the movies to see Frozen (it's excellent) and Addy was the envy of all the little girls in her Princess Elsa dress.

Addy and I made a Christmas tree using ornaments, styrofoam and glue. We got so giggly at one point, trying to take the tops off ornaments and having them shoot all over the room, that Addy (almost) wet her pants. Good times!
We took a break between antique shops and indulged in Addy's favorite treat - a Dairy Queen mint Oreo Blizzard. In 30 degree weather. Brrrrrrrr.
We put together puzzles - princess ones, of course. And read books. Lots and lots of books.
And best of all, we turned Addy into a dedicated antique/collectible shopper. Each day that we went antiquing, Addy had a set amount to spend (usually $10). She came home with some great treasures - Winston the bear, Fluffy McFlufferson (rabbit), Turkey Lurkey, and a couple of pegasus. Plus she learned a bit about handling money. (Shhhhh, don't tell her it was educational!)

Hubby and I found a few treasures too. An original Weave-It, complete with original needle and instructions;
and a set of vintage Boye interchangeable crochet hooks, with a beautiful amber-colored handle. The outside of the box is damaged and the set is missing 2 hooks, but I love it.
We flew out Friday night, getting to the house just before 1 a.m. Saturday morning. It was a wonderful trip, and we really miss Addy, but it also feels great to be home.

Mythbusters

We're all fans of the show, so when John spotted a Mythbusters exhibit at the Denver Natural History Museum, tickets were a must-have.

I expected a static exhibit, one where you look at someting in a glass box, read the accompanying description, and move on. Should have known better!
There were lots of hands-on, try-your-luck displays. Addy loved watching Mom successfully pull a tablecloth off without disturbing the dishes. (Hint: pull down, hard and fast.)

Addy and Dad tried the 'do you get wetter walking or running in the rain' experiment (hint: walking). Addy liked it so much that she ran it again, even though the "water" running off her hair and face looked like yellow, slimy, disgusting mucus in the black light mirrors. Yuuuuuuuck.
We found out that Pop is not faster than a speeding bullet,
that we can't throw a playing card fast enough to do damage, and that Rachel and Addy look great as floating heads. (Classic Christmas card, yes?)
We'd planned to see a show at the museum's planetarium, but it was closed for the day - like every other time we've been there, sigh - so we fell back to Plan B - Great White Sharks" in Imax 3-D.

Great show, especially for animal-lover Addy. One of these trips, I'd really like to see the planetarium though . . . .

Grandparent Day

Today was grandparent day at Addy's school, so PopPop, Grandpa Jim, and I joined her for lunch in the cafeteria,

then headed out to the playground for a brisk recess - 28 degrees! snow!
Addy was in heaven, having three of her favorite adults hanging out with her.

We were back again an hour later, with Addy's parents and her 2 pet rabbits in tow. For her birthday, Addy got to bring something to class for show and tell. Anybody surprised she chose the rabbits??
Both Angel and Benjamin (her new French Angora) were good boys and took a classroom of adoring, petting kids in stride.

Between lunch and rabbits, I finished Addy's surprise Viking hat*, in her favorite tourquoise and pink. She's promised to wear it again tomorrow when she and I (and mom, if she's good) are going to watch How To Train Your Dragon. Cool movie for a cool hat.
*Pattern is Lael's Viking Hat; my project notes are here.
